IDEAL FOR HOME MAINTENANCE
The ever popular 4’ x 4’ base size. Easy to erect in minutes and very safe. A platform height of 11' 6" ( photo left - code: ST44/10 ) gives working heights up to approx 17' 6" - easily enough to reach an average gutter level and first floor windows. Shown here with optional Adjustable Bases for levelling on uneven ground.

STABILITY WITH TALLER TOWERS
Towers with a platform height over 11' 6" should be tied securely to the building or have stabilisers fitted to maintain stability ( shown here is 14' 3" platform height - code: ST44/12 - with four stabilisers and Adjustable Bases added.

IDEAL FOR HEDGE TRIMMING
Saturn Towers are ideal for tall hedge trimming - much safer than a pair of steps.  Here is an example with a 6ft platform height tower 4'x4' (code: ST44/6) with boards & adjustable bases, giving a safe and stable platform from which hedges can be reached up to about 11ft high.

IMPROVED SAFETY GUARDRAILS
Note the substantial guardrail section which is a special safety feature of Saturn Towers. Guardrails are 3ft high and double-level so that even if users kneel down or sit on the platform there is still a guardrail in front of them.

EXTRA BOARDS
Although only one platform level is adequate for most work, the addition of a few extra boards at intervals up the tower makes erection and dismantling much easier.  It also helps when carrying materials up the tower as they can be placed on the boards within reach before climbing up to them and repeating the process. Note that towers should only be climbed from the INSIDE for safety. Climbing at a corner is easiest, using the rails on both left and right, almost as a vertical ladder - extra boards make this much easier too.

IDEAL FOR STAIRWELL DECORATION
Saturn Towers can be converted into scaffolds to provide safe access in most stairwells. Much safer than flimsy steps and scaffold boards!  Note that 4'x2' & 6'x2' Saturn Towers are actually 2' 6" overall width - check your stairwell is wide enough!

TYPICAL STAIRWELL KIT  -  2 x 4' Frames ; 3 x 2'6" Frames ; 1 x Diagonal Brace (4x2) ; 3 x Platform Boards ; 2 x Base Plates ; 2 x Adjustable Bases.  Variations to this typical version will often be necessary because stair dimensions vary so widely.

DECORATORS KIT  -  just a few tower components can make a really useful platform for internal decoration. Typical components - 2 x 4' Frames ; 2 x 2'6" Frames ; 1 x Diagonal Brace (4x2) ; 2 x Platform Boards ; 4 x Castors ( or Base Plates ).

 CANTILEVERS  -  Cantilevers can be constructed to overcome many awkward situations such as dormer windows, lean-to buildings etc

CASTORS  -  Castors make a tower easier to move on firm level surfaces. A thumbscrew secures castors to tower upright. A footpad or second thumbscrew brakes the wheel and also locks the ball-race to prevent swivelling whilst braked.  Castors will add 6" to tower platform heights.

ADJUSTABLE BASES & CASTORS  -  The screw thread gives 6" of height adjustment so that towers can be safely levelled when erected on uneven or sloping ground. Thumbscrew locks adjuster to tower upright. If erected on sloping ground great care should be taken when using adjustable castors - ensure the tower cannot roll away when brakes are released!  Adjustable Castors will add 8" to tower platform heights.

STABILISERS (OUTRIGGERS)  -  Stabilisers couple to the corners of a tower to increase the base dimensions and make the tower safe at greater heights. Saturn Tower stabilisers are fitted with scaffold type couplers and wing nuts (spanner not required).  Detailed notes on their use are on the "Components" page

PLATFORM BOARDS  -  These are not included in tower kits. They are available from Lansford but specifications are provided - click here - for customers who wish to make their own boards. Standard scaffold boards cut to the required length are ideal for this purpose. Some customers choose to make even more elaborate platforms  including trapdoors - it is important to ensure your platform is at least as strong as our platform boards.

COMPACT STORAGE  -  Saturn Towers take up very little space when dismantled. Easy to store and easy to transport.  Most sizes of 4' x 4' tower plus platform boards  will fit easily in the rear of a family sized hatchback car with the seats folded down. Here is an 11' 6" platform height tower 4'x4' plus boards in the back of an A4 estate - loads of room to spare!

SATURN LADDER TOWERS  -  customers who use towers for commercial rather than domestic work should comply with The Construction (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations 1966. Please see separate price list for Saturn Ladder Towers which include trapdoor platform, toeboards, internal ladders, stabilisers etc to ensure compliance with these regulations - click here.

Saturn Towers
STABILISERS / OUTRIGGERS - These are not included in tower kits.   Towers with a platform height exceeding 3 times their smallest base dimension should either be tied-in securely to the building or have outriggers/stabilisers fitted to provide accceptable stability & safety.

CORRECT USE OF STABILISERS  -  stabilisers should be fitted to the corners of the tower when the platform height is over the maximum free-standing height of 11' 6" for 4'x4' & 6'x4' towers; or over 6ft for 4'x2' & 6'x2' towers. Outriggers increase the smallest base dimension and make towers stable at greater heights. When fitted correctly, they will make the tower safe to a maximum platform height of 22'6" (4' wide towers) or 17' 0" (2'6" wide towers). Taller towers must be tied-in at this height and again at maximum 6ft intervals.

Most domestic users only fit two outriggers (those away from the wall). The correct method of fitting outriggers is to use four (one at each tower corner) with the inner outriggers parallel to the wall giving a "K" formation. Full details of outrigger use are included in the Safety Notes provided with your tower.

TYING-IN AS ALTERNATIVE TO USING STABILISERS  -  ties must be positioned at the maximum free-standing heights shown above and repeated at maximum 6ft intervals. Wall ties should be made with sturdy wall anchors which expand in the brickwork or by bracing a stout beam across the inside of a window aperture. DO NOT tie to downpipes or other insubstantial fittings.

PLATFORM BOARDS -  These are not included in tower kits.   Specifications are provided here for customers who wish to make their own boards. Standard scaffold boards cut to the required length are ideal for this purpose. The small battens ("stops") fitted to the underside ensure the boards do not slide off the tower.

4' x 4' towers need 5 boards (52" x 9" x 1.5") with stops 2¼" from end;
6' x 4' towers need 8 boards (52" x 9" x 1.5") with stops 2¼" from end;
4' x 2' 6" towers need 3 boards (52" x 9" x 1.5") with stops 2¼" from end;
6' x 2' 6" towers need 8 boards (31" x 9" x 1.5") with stops 1¾" from end.
